FASTENER BEARING SPECIMEN SUPPORT FIXTURE  (ASTM D 5961)

Model No. CU-SF (low carbon steel)
Model No. WTF-SF  (17-4PH stainless)

This specimen support fixture, shown below, is used with Procedure B – Single Shear, of ASTM D 5961 (Reference 1).  The bearing strength of a 1.5” wide test specimen assembly containing one or two ¼” diameter fasteners is to be determined.  ASTM Standard D 5961 also includes Procedure A – Double Shear, which is described in Sections H-2 through H-4 of this catalog.

Assembled Fastener Bearing Specimen Support Fixture

The test specimen consists of two identical plates fastened together using one or two centerline fasteners, with a doubler on each end to minimize bending due to eccentricity of the applied force.  The support fixture can be used with either tensile or compressive loading, to stabilize the fixture and further minimize bending effects.  Hydraulic wedge grips are used to grip the support fixture at each end, just as discussed in Section C-1 of this catalog in relation to the Boeing Open-Hole Compression Test Fixture, Models CU-OH and WTF-OH (Reference 2).  The machine-roughened outer surfaces of the fixture are to aid gripping, can be seen in the above photograph.

As shown in the photograph below, the inside surfaces of the fixture are thermal sprayed with tungsten carbide particles, to aid in gripping the specimen ends.

Both the applied force and the associated deformation of the holes(s) in the specimen plates are monitored, to bearing failure of one or both specimen plates.
